Cake Decorating for Beginners: Tools and First Techniques
You do not need a large kit to decorate a cake neatly. A few tools and a calm approach are enough.
Basic tools
- An offset spatula for spreading.
- A bench scraper for smooth sides.
- A turntable, which makes frosting easier though it is not essential.
- Piping bags with a plain round tip and a star tip.
First techniques
Apply a thin crumb coat, chill for twenty minutes, then add the final layer. Pipe simple rosettes or shells using a star tip. Finish with fresh fruit or sprinkles.
Practise
Practise piping on baking paper before you decorate the cake. Scrape the frosting back into the bag and try again. A steady pressure matters more than a fancy pattern.
